Deck Joist Span — 16 Inch On Center

Sixteen inches on center is the default layout for many wood and composite decks. Here is every Table 2 span and overhang at that spacing.

All species at 16″ o.c.

When to choose 16″ o.c.

Use 16″ when decking allows it and you want a balance of lumber count versus span. Drop to 12″ if decking requires it or you need a longer joist span without upsizing. Jump to 24″ only when both the joist table and the decking product allow it—many composites do not.
